Highly recommend! This was a sold 4 star read for me and I added another for 2 great characters and just a great historical fiction all around! I'm really regretting not keeping Once We Were Brothers. Although not licensed to practice in Italy, Catherine and I loved Karolina's Twins, also by Ronald H. Balson, and it is no surprise that I also loved The Girl From Berlin. )Ada was born in Berlin on November 11, 1918 and became a concert violinist as a young girl. I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not reading the first four books.

That was as anticlimactic as it gets. So you’ve convinced me to stay away from this one. I loved reading about WWII from inside Germany and, eventually Italy. It juxtaposes a modern tale about a fight to save an elderly woman's home in Tuscany with the story of Ada, a young woman struggling to survive during the war. I also loved Kurt. The story switches between the present day in Siena and the late 1930s and early 1940s in Berlin, Germany and multiple locations in Italy. This book went back and forth between 2017 and the life of Ada Baumgarten and her family during World War II as Jews in Berlin. The the story of one tough-as-nails girl whose choices are few but whose fight is boundless. I did not read any of the previous books, but didn’t feel like I was out of the loop in any way. Ada's story was fascinating and captivated me from the start. Her nephew, Tony, asks his good friends Liam Taggert and Catherine Lockhart for help, promising them a free trip and lodging. Upon their arrival in Tuscany, she tells Catherine and Liam to read a memoir by a woman named Ada Baumgarten, a German violinist forced to flee Berlin and settle in Bologna, Italy when the Nazis took power.
