`The Mudge Boy' is a tragic film about the failure of masculinity. Does Perry kill Duncan? This need to classify, to objectify and to control is also a product of fear. 12 out of 16 found this helpful. Duncan is also rather stupid. The script, Duncan's story is a case that can even be a real case of our neighbor. High school senior Dorian begins a gay man's odyssey when he determines that he's gay and decides to come out. Although I found "The Mudge Boy" to be a more in-depth character study with more room for details, its predecessor is to be admired for its brevity in telling the same tale effectively. But although clearly attracted to gentle Duncan himself, the socially unacceptable suggestion of 'sissy' homosexuality makes Perry over-react and turn on his friend.Rated R for strong sexual content including graphic dialogue, a rape, and language Normally, in real life, a father might walk in on a son pounding one out (it happened to a friend…), but in the case of the Mudge boy, he walks in on his son wearing his dead Mother’s wedding dress (Awkward.) Michael Burke both wrote and directed this first class, finely wrought exploration of coming of age in the emotional battlefield of rural bigotry. I would think that it was going to go one direction, and then it would go another. As Fögi seduces him, Beni is willing to follow him where ever he takes him. The photography is excellent, beautiful. Played sensitively and perspicaciously (yes it’s a long word… look it up) by When his mother dies unexpectedly Mudge has a gentle almost heart warming attachment to his dead mother’s clothing and begins to wear items, much to the quiet and dignified horror of his father (Richard Jenkins), who plays the role with a brilliant distant exasperation, who wants his son to just be normal. I want to see what happened next. He grabs Duncan as he is crying and just hugs him and won't let go. Do they fall in love? Edgar, Duncan's distant sixty-year-old father, doesn't understand the strange manifestations of his son's mourning. The film follows the story of Duncan, a fourteen-year-old misfit farm boy trying to fill the void and alleviate the numbness left by his mother's passing.

There is so much to tell, and I am today so glad that for the first time I can look on the screen and see that there are others that have felt the loneliness, the rejection, the confusion, and the guilt, that a young boy had to endure just to fit in. The scene under the train bridge is breathtakingly romantic.

The Mudge Boy is about teenage sexuality in a rural setting. 22 out of 25 found this helpful. He reaches out to a slightly older youth, but the age old conflict between straight and gay males arises, and it is dealt with by a writer-director who is able to touch a nerve and show an insight that no other film maker has ever done in this tense situation.

Simply, this film is a little known gem of LGBT cinema. He sticks Chickens heads in his mouth to calm them down, and it looks very strange. Upon seeing the short film FISHBELLY WHITE (part of BOYS LIFE 5) I thought that Michael Burke's story of an off-beat rural farm boy and his pet chicken was both charming and shocking.
Edgar is resentful that Duncan isn't more helpful on their small farm and is shaken by observing Duncan's means of mourning his mother.
The plot line and characters are all the same, but the story is fleshed out in The Mudge Boy. Why can't Duncan grieve like a normal person? It was produced by Elizabeth W. Alexander and distributed by Showtime after its release at the 2003 Sundance Film …

I saw the premiere of this movie at the Sundance film festival. We do not get to see this mature masculinity very often and its very rarity has led so many to believe that the only form of masculinity is its degraded form of tyranny, irresponsibility, violence, and mindless cruelty. A teenage boy's search for love finds him fixated on a boy who lives nearby. He should've spent more time with his son and just sort out things to make sure their relationship is stable!
