He originally fell into deckhand work, but was intrigued by those divers who spent months at a time in a pressurised chamber on the ships on which he worked. But for the rescuers their training kicked in. But it was the miracle of his body lasting 35 minutes on a six-minute emergency air tank and the efforts of his colleagues that saw him live another day and escape the terrifying ordeal unscathed.Mr Lemons, from Mallaig in the Highlands, is a saturation diver and worked in the North Sea where he would dive from his ship in the Bibby Topaz in a diving bell where he would repair oil rig structures.But Mr Lemons’ life changed forever in September 2012 when he became trapped on the seabed for nearly 40 minutes, with his back-up gas tank only holding six minutes of breathable air.When the dynamic positioning computer on his vessel failed 300 feet above him, the ship moved away in the rough weather, which caused his umbilical, which supplies heat and oxygen, to become taut and snap.It was then that Mr Lemons became aware of what he was facing.He told documentary ‘Last Breath’, which is currently in UK cinemas: “I realised very quickly that my chances of survival or being rescued were pretty much non-existent.“You do the quick maths in the moment and I knew that the bailout would only last five or six minutes at absolute best, so I knew that even if they had been straight above me on their way to rescue me there was a decent chance that I wouldn’t have been back in time.“Once I had resigned myself to the fact that I wasn’t going to be able to save myself, calm comes over you I think, resignation more than anything else.“Then it was just a case of being extremely sad, it wasn’t a case of frantically thrashing about and searching for a solution, it was a case of quiet resignation and thinking of the people you’re going to leave behind.”Incredible footage captures the moment a underwater vehicle is used to locate Mr Lemon’s body on top of the manifold.Once the team of divers managed to get the Topaz back in to position, divers Dave Yuasa and Duncan Allcock had the job of hauling Mr Lemons from the dive bell.After Mr Allcock performed resuscitation, Mr Lemons miraculously came round after more than 30 minutes without his emergency supply of air.With nothing to breathe for that long Mr Lemons was lucky not to be left with brain damage and thanked the “amazing people” who saved him.He said: “I assumed it was the extreme cold of the water that slowed my functions down. But the gas we breathe has a high concentration of oxygen which saturated my tissues and cells to allow me to survive.”Mr Lemons was back in the sea with his team three weeks later and married fiancee Morag Martin a few months down the line.And six years on, his now-wife recalls the moment she nearly lost her partner.She said: “My stomach still churns to hear the story.
